What a Philadelphia Winter Does to Your Car's Interior
By March the carpets have a white crust that vacuuming doesn't touch, and there's a reason for that.

Every Philadelphia winter, the same thing happens in cars all over Fishtown, Northern Liberties, and the rest of the city. Salt gets spread on the roads when ice is in the forecast, it rides in on your boots and floor mats, and by March the carpets have a pale, crusty film that doesn't vacuum out. The trunk is often worse, since that's where wet boots, bags, and gear end up. Alexis Lincoln described exactly this in her Google review of our mobile service: "my car had a ton of salt crusted into the trunk from the winter, and my backseat had a major stain. They were able to get out every stain, all of the salt, and every issue to where my car looked completely brand new again." She added that the detail was "100% worth the price." If your interior looks like hers did, here's what's going on and how we deal with it.
Why salt is so stubborn indoors
Road salt dissolves in water and dries back into crystals. Walk across a wet carpet in winter and the salt goes into the fibers with the melted snow. When the carpet dries, the crystals stay behind as that white crust. Some de-icing salts also draw moisture out of the air, so a patch of carpet can stay slightly damp for weeks, which is how a winter mess turns into a musty smell by spring. A vacuum pulls up loose grit but leaves most of the dissolved salt in the weave, which is why the carpet looks better for a day and then the white comes back as it dries. Getting it out means working water or steam into the fibers to dissolve the salt, and then lifting it out again with shampoo, not just scrubbing the surface. Floor mats and the trunk liner need the same treatment, and so does anything the salt wicked into, like the lower edges of the seats.
Our Complete Interior Deluxe is built for this kind of job. It takes 3 hours and starts at $275, and it covers a thorough vacuum, full upholstery cleaning, carpet shampooing, headliner cleaning, leather seat conditioning where applicable, a disinfectant, and a surface coating for protection, delivered as a complete full interior detail. It leaves the exterior alone, so it's the right choice when the paint is fine and the damage is inside. Price varies by vehicle size, so a sedan, an SUV, and a three-row minivan will each start at a different number, and it's worth telling us which one you have when you call. The protective surface coating at the end is part of the package, not an add-on.
When the whole car needs it
If the outside has had a rough winter too, the MVP Detail covers both. It runs 3 hours 45 minutes and starts at $349, and it pairs an exterior wash and dry with a one-stage polish and wax. Inside, it adds interior steam cleaning, deep carpet and upholstery shampoo, floor mat cleaning, a carpet and upholstery repellent, vinyl protectant, and an odor neutralizer. We list it as best for stains, odors, and family cars, and salt season tends to produce all three. Steam and shampoo are the two tools that matter most for crusted carpet, since one loosens what's trapped in the fibers and the other lifts it out. If your carpets are only lightly marked, the 2-hour All Star Detail, from $225, includes light seat and carpet cleaning for a moderate condition, plus floor mat cleaning and an odor neutralizer.
A few things make the job go better. Pull out any bags, gear, and loose items before we start, and take anything valuable with you, since we aren't responsible for items left in the vehicle. If you already know about a spot, like a spill on the back seat, mention it when you book, because the amount of work a stain needs can change the time and the price. We can also come to you. Alexis wrote that the team came to her apartment where the car was parked out front, and that it was easy for her to run in and out while working from home. Salt doesn't wait for a convenient moment, and neither does the damp it leaves behind, so spring, once the last salt runs are behind us, is the natural time to reset the interior. Some owners also like to book a lighter interior visit in midwinter, so the crust never gets the chance to settle into the carpet for months.

Car Wash vs. Detail: What You're Actually Paying For
A wash and a detail are different jobs, and choosing the wrong one is how people end up paying twice.
Why Paint Correction Comes Before a Ceramic Coating
A coating protects paint. It doesn't fix it, which is why the order of the work matters.
